What is an ATS score?

An ATS score is an estimate of how easily screening software can read your resume and how closely it matches a role. If the software can't extract your experience, or doesn't find the skills the job asks for, a strong candidate can be filtered out before anyone reads the CV. Checking your score first shows you what the software sees - and what to change.

How RoleMapr scores your resume

The instant check (no sign-up) gives you three scores out of 100. Your full ATS score is in the free signed-in report, and combines these signals:

Resume score

Overall strength of the content for your role.

Formatting

How cleanly the layout and sections read.

Skills

How well your skills cover what the role asks for.

Skills and keyword match

How many of the skills and terms the role asks for appear in your resume - in context, not as a list.

Parseability

Whether the text can be read cleanly: no scanned images, text boxes or layouts that break when software extracts them.

Sections

Standard sections an ATS looks for - Experience, Education, Skills, Projects - found and in a sensible order.

Formatting signals

Consistent dates, bullet points and headings, and contact details where they can be found.

Experience and education

How your experience and qualifications line up with the level of the role.

Penalties

Points come off for keyword stuffing, missing key details and dates that don't add up.

What is a good ATS score?

75 and above
Strong

Reads well to most systems. Tailor it to each job description and apply.

50 to 74
Needs work

Likely readable, but missing skills or weak formatting may hold it back.

Below 50
At risk

Fix the layout and sections first, then add the skills the role asks for.

Bands are a guide to RoleMapr's scores; each employer configures its own ATS differently.

How to improve your ATS score

  • Use a single-column layout with standard headings. Tables, columns and text boxes often come out jumbled.
  • Save your CV as a text-based PDF - not a scanned image or a photo of a page.
  • Mirror the job title and the key skills from the job description, in your own words and only where they are true.
  • Write results, not duties: what you did, with which tools, and what changed because of it.
  • Keep dates in one format (for example Jan 2023 - Mar 2025) and make sure they don't overlap without reason.
  • Put your name, email, phone and city at the top, in plain text rather than a header graphic.

Frequently asked questions

What is an ATS score?

An ATS (applicant tracking system) score estimates how well software that companies use to screen applications can read your resume and match it to a role. It looks at whether your text can be extracted cleanly, whether your sections are recognised, and how closely your skills and experience fit what the role asks for.

How do I check the ATS score of my resume for free?

Upload your CV as a PDF on this page. Without an account you see your resume, formatting and skills scores, the role your resume fits, your experience level, and its main strengths and areas to improve. With a free RoleMapr account you also get the full ATS score and the breakdown behind it.

What is a good ATS score?

On RoleMapr's 0-100 scores, 75 or above is strong, 50 to 74 means it needs some work, and below 50 means the layout or content is likely holding it back. Scores are a guide - every company's ATS is configured differently - so always tailor your resume to the job you're applying for.

Why is my ATS score low?

The usual reasons are a layout software can't read (columns, tables, images), non-standard section names, missing skills that the role asks for, or inconsistent dates. The areas to improve shown after your check point to what to fix first.

Does a higher ATS score guarantee a shortlist?

No. A good score means your resume is easy for software to read and matches the role well, which improves your chances of reaching a recruiter. Recruiters still decide on your experience, results and fit.

Is my CV kept private?

Your CV is used to run the check and, if you choose to create an account, to power your profile and job matches. See our Privacy Policy for how resumes are stored and who can see them.
